He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Psalm 91:4 NLT
A few weeks ago a terrifying wildfire swept across Northern California killing twenty-one people. Among the stories of the deceased is the story of a 70-year-old great grandmother and two great-grandchildren (James 5 and Emily 4) that perished in the fire. The great-grandfather received a call shortly after he left to get supplies from five-year-old James. The boy asked him to come home because they needed help. The fire was closing in. He was not allowed to go back because of the wall of fire. It was devastating news, and the families are grieving with deep sorrow, but the part that caught my attention was this quote: “Grandma did everything she could to save them. She hovered over them with a wet blanket.”
That picture is the picture of motherly love. It is the picture of someone doing everything they can to save those around them. Sometimes our best efforts are not enough. While we may not be walking through an actual fire, things will surface in our lives that threaten to upset our peace and even security. That is why we place ourselves in God’s hands. That is why we rely on His promises and walk in His ways. Even this is not a guarantee that we will not suffer because things happen on this broken planet. Some tragedies strike. Our bodies are fragile, and sickness can threaten and even take our lives. Evil people can harm others. And the list goes on. But in the midst of everything we read the above verse and realize that God like a mother hen will cover and shelter us with His promises and protection. He knows about you and your situation today. Don’t be afraid to trust Him. Let Him give you peace and even joy in the midst of turmoil. Christians aren’t protected from the things that happen to everyone else, but we have a loving and powerful God that promises to help up and walk beside us even through the devastation. Put your hand in His today. Allow yourself to feel the covering of His wings and the warmth of His presence in your life.
“We like to control the map of our life and know everything well in advance. But faith is content just knowing that God's promise cannot fail. This, in fact, is the excitement of walking with God.” ― Jim Cymbala
“You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope.” ― Thomas Merton
