There Your Heart Will Be Also

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV)

One of the dominant messages sent by our culture is that success is measured largely by financial standing. Despite the fact that most of us know there is a limit to the satisfaction and security money provides, we must constantly fight the temptation to place our trust in our possessions.

Through many verses, Scripture provides helpful clarity on this topic. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount is one such passage. Not only does He provide a practical lesson on the temporal nature of earthly treasure, but He also brings a stark reminder that our financial priorities correlate directly to our spiritual ones. This is not to say that wisdom in the way we steward our finances and provide for our needs are somehow incorrect aims in and of themselves; rather, it is a reminder to first ground our handling of money and possessions in biblical truth.
